Instigating Religious Crisis: Obi Not To Blame

It is possible for a public speaker, either as a politician or clergy, to be thrilled by the ephemeral cascade of encomia from moulded audiences. Owing to either pseudo or genuine praise from his audiences, he may be excited. But he will need to be cautious of his public utterances. Moreover, if the speaker must enthusiastically address his audiences at various events for twelve or more cumulative and stressful hours daily; unless his managers are competent, there is the likelihood for him to start making unguarded and ill-advised statements as a result of stress or overzealousness.

If he does, his handlers should be held responsible for gross negligence that could adversely undermine the objective of their subject, making all of them unfit for the job.

So, when the Presidential Flag Bearer of the Labour Party, Dr. Peter Obi’s clarion call for Christians to take over power hit social media a few days ago, Nigerians who believe in the unity of this country were taken aback and uncomfortable with the religious crisis-prone statement from the Labour party!

The instigation-oriented and rude-awakening political statement from a person who is aspiring to be president of Nigeria has created fear in the minds of unity-friendly Nigerians. As a result, deep thinkers, particularly our Muslim brothers and sisters are looking at the statement from the perspective of disunity and the intent to polarize the country by fueling discord between them and their Christian counterparts.

Many people are saying that for Obi to have carved out a section of our polity as where his interest is anchored at this early stage of working towards a new dispensation that will unite Nigeria, is a dangerous and clear indication of separation should he become the president of Nigeria.

Nigeria has a population of over two hundred and fifty million. She is a multi-ethnic and secular state. Above all, Nigeria is currently facing the challenges of ethnicity and religious chauvinism. Therefore, we shall need a known detribalized statesman that lacks religious fanaticism to fix this country.

In conclusion, and for the sake of clarity, Obi and his managers will need to imperatively revisit the burning issue and make their stand known to Nigerians. Certainly, Obi’s portion of the Christian population in Nigeria cannot give him polling victory come February 2023. He will therefore need to cautiously soft-pedal!
